What Do Followers Want? A Review of Two Decades of Research
We review twenty years of studies on what followers expect from leaders. Across 94 papers, honesty, competence and consistent treatment appear far more often than charisma. Expectations differ by culture and by career stage, but the core pattern is stable. We highlight gaps in research on frontline workers and propose a research agenda focused on everyday leader behaviour. -
Mentoring Programmes in Early-Career Academics
Early-career academics report uncertainty about promotion, funding and balance. We evaluate a mentoring programme across four universities using surveys and interviews. Participants with mentors who met regularly and gave candid feedback reported higher confidence and clearer plans. Matching on research interest mattered more than seniority. We discuss design choices for institutions starting similar programmes. -
Leadership Development Budgets: Where Does the Money Go?
Organisations spend large sums on leadership development, but few can say what they receive in return. This paper tracks spending in 52 companies and relates it to promotion rates and engagement. Programmes tied to real work challenges and followed by coaching were associated with better outcomes than stand-alone workshops. We offer a simple checklist for reviewing development spending.
